about

For his 2019 EP, Retrace, Seattle-based producer Jeff McIlwain, aka Lusine, embraced iteration, setting his dials to “loop” in order to create his most introverted yet engaging, and kinetically-curious music of his two-decade-long career. Fittingly, the work echoes and ricochets further with Retrace Remixes, featuring edits by two young and talented contemporaries, Loraine James and ReeLLove.

Loraine James cited Lusine as an influence when sharing her recent Wire Mix and has called Language Barrier her "favourite ambient album of all time," which led us to reach out to the young phenom. Following the North London producer's breakout sophomore LP on Hyperdub, she released two acclaimed EPs in 2020 and now tackles the title track to Lusine's last EP. Her improvisational, jazz-rooted take on glitchy electronics is a perfect match for the controlled chaos of "Retrace." James dissembles the original's synth pattern, rebuilding the framework with a high-tempo flurry of swung accents, breaks, and corridors.

Thailand-based producer Pathompol Chanin, who was discovered by McIlwain via an online remix competition, approaches "Not Alone" under his ReeLLove alias affiliated with Bangkok beat collective RenRen BeatzCamp. He cuts and scatters the vocals (from Jenn Champion) above a flutter of cavernous keys, propulsive beats, and gripping static sprays. A warbly electric piano phrase lends to the subtle build-up, placing this remix right at home with the repetition and tone at the heart of Lusine's Retrace project.
